Some golfers wait a lifetime to win a club competition

Some golfers wait a lifetime to win a club competition. But others? Well, take the case of 17-year-old Aoife Breen from Ardee. Last Wednesday, she played in her first ever club competition and off a handicap of 45 she won over her home course with 47 points. Encouraged by her victory, Aoife travelled down to Newlands Golf Club the following day to play in the Newlands Cup. Here, the maximum handicap was 36, but that didn't deter her. She won with 49 points. With two victories in her first two competitions, the handicap committee produced a sharp knife and cut Aoife by a whopping 13 shots. Surely that will stop her, they thought.

But on Sunday, she returned to her home club and played in a Four Person Team event. And guess what? She won. Three victories in her first three club competitions, is this a record?

Old Conna Golf Club came of age on Sunday when they recorded their first success in the Leinster Section of the Bulmers Irish Junior Cup, beating The Island 3 1/2 1 1/2 in an exciting final at Hollywood Lakes. Qualifiers from Slade Valley, Old Conna beat Blainroe in the quarter finals 4-1 and followed with a similar winning margin over Co Louth in the semi-finals.

The final against the Island was, however, a nailbiting affair with the two deciding matches going to the final green. Gerard O'Gorman beat Ivan Genockey in the top match and Patrick Hyde holed a vital eightfoot putt for a birdie four to beat Lumsden Cup holder, Glen Rogers, one up, to secure Old Conna's place in the All Ireland finals after Paul McDonald had beaten Krishna Padayache on the 14th.

No fives and no dropped shots was Michael McDermott's recipe for a new course record at the testing Arklow Links in last week's Leinster Boys' Amateur Open championship. The Stackstown 17-year-old finished runner-up to runaway winner David Jones from City of Derry when he shot a magnificent three-underpar 65 in the third round without a five or a dropped shot on his card. One birdie on the front nine saw him cover the outward half in one-under-par 32 and birdies at the 13th and 18th brought him home in 33 for a new record for the altered course.

Michael finished seven shots behind Jones who had rounds of 68, 70, 70 and 73.

Gort members figured prominently in the Ford Ladies' strokeplay championship, Western Region finals at Glasson last week. Mary Carey (10) won class one with a 74 from Longford's Olivia Conroy (6) 76 with Vera McAteer (7) from Letterkenny third also on 76.

Margaret Kelleher (19) made it a Gort double when her 69 was three shot better than Kay McGowan (21) from Ballybunion and Ann Burns (19) Esker Hills in Class Two.

Sam Torrance (left) joined Michael McGuirk, managing director McGuirks, at the official opening of the company's new store in Blanchardstown last week.

Ann Lyons had a six-point cushion when winning the Eilish Gunning Memorial Trophy and IPGA Tankard at Sutton last week. Lyons, who plays off 32, blitzed the course in ten shots less than her handicap for a great score of 46 points to win from Ita Brophy (22) who scored 40 points.

Open Week at Enniscrone Golf Club proved particularly memorable for Fidi O'Farrell who won four major prizes. She won the opening ladies competition on the Monday with 39 points, finished second twice - on the following day with 38 and on Friday with 37- and finished up on Sunday with a third place after another 38 points.

Former Irish international Paul Rayfus, who is captain of Co Meath Golf Club, won the Open Fourball competition on Sunday at his home club with a superb score of 10 up. Paul, who plays off two, had Brendan Swan, a one-armed golfer who plays off a 12 handicap, as his partner.
