UEFA will only investigate claims that AC Milan have been offered cash incentives by Barcelona to beat Leeds in tomorrow's Champions League clash if they are presented with any evidence.

Reports in the Spanish press yesterday said Barca were offering Milan players £61,500 a man to beat David O'Leary's side - a result which would see the Catalan club through to the second phase.

The claims have been denied by AC Milan, and although UEFA have no written rules about any such incentives, spokesman Mike Lee said: "It is not appropriate to comment on rumours but if people have evidence then they should provide us with it and we would then investigate."

AC Milan's vice-president Adriano Galliani said: "No director of Barcelona has made a proposition to AC Milan, its directors or its squad, of a win bonus in the match against Leeds."

Spain's daily Catalan Sport quoted AC Milan's Spanish forward Jose Mari saying: "I'm one of those people who believe that offering financial incentives to win is not illegal." Mari did not confirm the information, but added: "If Joan Gaspart (Barca president) wants to give us something we will accept it in good faith."
