ITALIAN SERIE A: A dramatic stoppage-time winner by Adriano gave Inter Milan a 3-2 win over city rivals AC Milan in a pulsating derby yesterday.

Inter's victory - their first over Milan in the league since March 2002 - lifted them to second on 32 points, 10 behind leaders Juventus who earlier crushed Cagliari 4-0.

Fiorentina are third, also with 32 points, after a 1-0 win over Treviso on Saturday. Milan slip to fourth on 31 points.

Inter came out aggressively, pushing Milan into their own half, and took the lead in the 24th minute.

Obafemi Martins played a one-two with strike partner Adriano and rushed into the area only for defender Alessandro Nesta to tumble in front of him.

It looked like a harmless incident but referee Domenico Messina adjudged Nesta to have had obstructed the Nigerian and gave Inter a penalty, which Adriano converted by sending Dida the wrong way.

Milan responded by upping the tempo, reaping the reward seven minutes from halftime when Kaka won a free-kick on the edge of Inter's area.

Dejan Stankovic handled Andrea Pirlo's kick and Milan had a penalty of their own, which Andriy Shevchenko dispatched coolly into the bottom corner.

Both sides continued to press forward after the interval. Milan striker Alberto Gilardino narrowly failed to connect with a Jaap Stam cross that flashed dangerously across Inter's goal before Martins restored Inter's lead with a poacher's goal in the 59th minute.

Adriano fired in a powerful free-kick and Dida parried but he could not prevent Martins firing home the loose ball.

An 83rd-minute Stam header from a Pirlo free-kick briefly levelled the scores but in the first minute of stoppage time Adriano headed a corner past Dida to give Inter the three points and consign Milan to a third loss in their last four Serie A matches.

Juventus had a much easier time overcoming Cagliari, who arrived at Turin's Stadio delle Alpi having earned just one point from seven away matches this season.

Their resistance crumbled quickly, with Pavel Nedved putting the home side ahead after just 10 minutes.

Midfielder Patrick Vieira conjured up a lovely chip over the defence to Trezeguet and although Cagliari goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo blocked the French striker's lob he could not prevent Nedved tucking away the loose ball.

Trezeguet got on the scoresheet eight minutes later with a spectacular finish at full stretch to poke the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Fabio Cannavaro and Adrian Mutu went close to extending Juve's advantage before Trezeguet got their third goal - and his 13th in Serie A this season - in the 53rd minute, sweeping home Nedved's lay-off.

The French international completed a memorable performance midway through the half when he rushed into the area, rounded Campagnolo and angled a shot goalwards.

The ball bounced off the base of the post, struck back-pedalling defender Fabio Vignati and rolled into the net to complete Juventus's victory.

Elsewhere, Livorno's excellent run continued as they beat Lazio 2-1 to consolidate fifth place on 28 points.

SPANISH PRIMERA LIGA: Barcelona are still six points ahead of Real Madrid in the race for the Spanish title and Osasuna lie in second-place, due to the leaders' superior goal difference.

The Catalan side went a goal down against Seville in the 63rd minute but Samuel Eto'o equalised two minutes later. Ronaldinho then scored the winning goal with 12 minutes of the game remaining with a spectacular solo effort.

Osasuna extended their perfect home record to eight wins when they beat struggling Real Mallorca 1-0 at El Sadar thanks to an early strike from Pierre Webo

yesterday afternoon.

Real Madrid moved up to third after a 2-0 win at Malaga gave new coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro a winning start in the league.

Defender Sergio Ramos headed in the first goal from a corner and Brazilian forward Robinho added a second four minutes later with a fierce strike from 15 metres.

Villarreal, Deportivo Coruna, Valencia and Celta Vigo are all tucked in close behind, a further two points back from Real. Villarreal won 3-1 at Real Sociedad on Saturday while Valencia were held 1-1 by struggling visitors Athletic Bilbao.
