Sir, - In recent years the numbers of advertisements for computers in the national dailies has increased dramatically. Prices have also fallen, but the technology is still out of reach of many people. However, despite a recommendation that the VAT of 21 per cent be reduced or removed, the Government has yet to do so.
If the Government's policy is set on making Ireland the technological centre of Europe and the hub of the telecommunications revolution, then surely the best solution would be to lower the levy on new computers.
The 21 per cent duty is simply unjustified, so perhaps the next Budget will encourage higher computer ownership in this Celtic Tiger of ours. - Yours, etc.,
Gavin Sheridan, Owenabue Heights, Carrigaline, Co Cork.
