Madam, - I can well understand Jean Slowey's frustration and anger over the killings in Darfur (November 18th). I am similarly shocked and stunned by the continuing atrocities there.
When their villages were raided and destroyed by the Janjaweed militia, vulnerable women and children fled to camps for internally displaced people in search of protection, shelter and food. They may have found food and shelter but they remain under attack and live in constant fear of further assaults.
GOAL has been trying for more than 13 months to persuade the international community to do something to protect the lives of the 1.5 million people who have been displaced by this conflict and cannot return home.
To date, however, absolutely nothing has been done by the United Nations Security Council to save the lives of these people or to offer them any form of meaningful protection.
And still gullible people believe that the UN fulfils its mandate. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN O'SHEA, GOAL, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin
