Sir, – Brian Cullen, who calls for a new political party (January 12th), shows little understanding of the reality of politics.

For such a party to emerge the first requirement would be a new electorate.

He would be well advised to get out on the stump at the first opportunity and he will find the question which arises most often is “what can you do for me”. He will find that the candidate who doesn’t keep the parish pump well primed will not prosper.

He suggests the people who would make up this new party be “those who have real experience of business and financial realities”.

Would these be the people who ran financial institutions, construction, etc, when the boom was booming?

When that boom went bust I recall you published a long letter from “46 top economists” telling us what should have been and what not. Hindsight economists every one.

Mr Cullen and others would do well to bear in mind the old adage: in a democracy we get the politicians and governments we deserve. – Yours, etc,
