The future of the Labour Party

Sir, – As a member of the Labour Party I agree with some and strongly disagree with other points made by Aodhán Ó Ríordáin (Opinion, August 13th).

I strongly disagree with his criticism of the Coalition government, “We let the people down”. The fundamental question which I have posed on this page and still await an answer is: what was the viable alternative?

Socialism is the grand ideal but was designed for a race other than the human. Greed and stupidity are the engines that drive us.

As a member of the UK Labour Party I saw that under Thatcher the working class was the backbone of her support. I saw a similar situation here when the boom was booming.

The best solution must be a Labour-Fine Gael coalition and ensure that capitalism benefits the majority, with absolute support for the EU which is the nearest to socialism we shall ever see. – Yours, etc,

JAMES MORAN,

Bunclody, Co Wexford.
