State-funded schools and the church

Sir, – Seamus McKenna (June 2nd) has expressed the concern, with regard to Catholic education in the wake of the marriage referendum, that "our children are to be indoctrinated in a philosophy that is totally at odds with the prevailing will of the people". If there were any substance to his concerns, the Yes campaign would have failed. What occurs in Catholic schools is not "indoctrination" but presentation of the moral and doctrinal truths of the Catholic faith. As is abundantly evident, young people are entirely free to accept or reject these truths. They are not brainwashed. What must continue to occur in Catholic schools is the clear presentation of the truth about human morality and sexuality not influenced by the spirit of the age. The "reality check" mentioned by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin can only be in the light of the revealed will of God, presenting afresh the challenge to "not be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of your minds" (Romans 12:2). – Yours, etc,
