Sir, - The recently produced Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on behalf of Dublin Corporation is misleading and appears contrived. It fails to adequately address or deal with the real issue: the erection of a structure twice as high as Liberty Hall on the middle of O'Connell Street which is not related to the scale and quality of the street as exemplified by its architecture and civic design. This latter qualification was a requirement of the brief in the competition which spawned this Spike.
The important critical point of impact is in O'Connell Street and not in the diversionary display of photomontages of distant views of the spike.
Could the city manager, Mr Fitzgerald, now please explain to the people of Ireland how this proposed structure could possibly enhance, or improve O'Connell Street? The people of Ireland are entitled to know. O'Connell Street is the main street of their capital city.
I challenge Mr Fitzgerald to publicly debate this issue with me on radio or television. - Yours, etc.,
Micheal O Nuallain, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
