Something in the water

Sir, – I wish to clarify the situation regarding the Dublin water supply (Malcolm Coxall, March 26th)

Sir, – I wish to clarify the situation regarding the Dublin water supply (Malcolm Coxall, March 26th)

The drinking water supply to the Dublin region is subject to a rigorous and comprehensive quality testing regime, in excess of that required by EU directives, and the results are published annually by the Environmental Protection Agency. The provision of a safe, potable water supply by the Dublin authorities to 1.6 million people on a daily basis (water passes through 8,000km of watermains, of which 800km are in excess of 100 years old) makes it essential that such testing is carried out in order to ensure the water is to the appropriate standard.

Any deterioration in quality is investigated and, depending on the parameter, is reported to the HSE. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL PHILLIPS,

Dublin City Engineer,

Civic Offices,

Wood Quay,
