Schools and indoctrination

Sir, – If you want your child to become an atheist, send him or her to a Catholic school. All the evidence is there. The vast majority of the present generation who went to Catholic-managed schools appear to have no religious affiliations or are simply agnostic.

The notion that schools “indoctrinate” is daft. To do so they would need card-carrying, fully paid-up members of Opus Dei or similar organisations to operate there. Most teachers are indifferent to religion one way or the other.

The Catholic Church in Ireland long ago gave up any attempt to spread its message to the younger generation. Instead, it had the silly idea that if it “controlled” the schools, then the schools would do the work for them.

People who are seriously worried about indoctrination should spend a day in an average school and they might quickly learn that their fears are unfounded. – Yours, etc,
