A chara, – Wesley Boyd ("RTÉ flies Vatican flag by keeping Angelus on air", Opinion & Analysis, October 28th) asks if we would "trust the veracity of a station broadcasting on the . . . Middle East if its news bulletin was immediately preceded by a muezzin?"
Frankly, yes. I’d take it as a sign the station in question was addressing also the very people or culture it was purporting to report on.
We could recast Mr Boyd’s question and ask if we can take seriously the ability of the national broadcaster or media to report honestly or fairly on catholic religious matters if it refused to spare even one miserly minute on the Angelus out of all the time it finds to spend on a myriad of non-religious subjects. It would call into question the station’s very “representativeness”, when huge numbers of its licence-fee payers – a majority of the population in fact – still describe themselves as Catholic. – Is mise,
