RTÉ and the TV licence

Sir, – Michael McDowell (“RTÉ’s crisis is financial but State broadcaster must refresh itself for post-Covid revamp”, Opinion & Analysis, August 4th) rightly notes the antiquated collection system for the TV licence and suggests a reasonable alternative, something similar to the local property tax system.

His point that “we are entitled to know that we are getting value for money” is an understatement.

From early June, the tumbleweed rolls into RTÉ radio and television with repeat programmes and stand-in presenters.

Maybe I can claim a refund for the “bucket and spade” months of June to August on my TV licence? – Yours, etc,

MIKE MORAN,
