Sir, - I read with interest Mary Hannigan's article on the sporting hero Red Collier (January 5th), but was dismayed at her spurious remark about the quality of Flahavans. Flahavans have been producing oatlets at Kilmacthomas, Waterford for over 200 years and are one of Ireland's most established and trusted brands.

Flahavan's Progress Oatlets are a completely natural, energy-rich food produced to the highest standards. While people have long understood that porridge is good for you, Flahavans offer a basket of benefits rarely found in other cereals. They are rich in natural fibre which is important for good digestion and may help protect against colon cancer. They are also high in soluble fibre which may help protect against heart disease by lowering cholesterol. They are low in sodium and do not contain any additives or added sugar. Flahavans' warming benefits are well appreciated by families as a warm nutritious start to the day and a help in preparing children brave the cold in the morning.

Generations of Irish families have enjoyed Flahavans and in spite of the much broader range of cereals available today, over a third of Irish households choose this brand. In an era when over 80 per cent of our cereals are imported, Flahavan's Progress Oatlets continue to be made from the finest Irish oats, by an independent, family-owned Irish company.

For the record, I took the time to talk to Red Collier himself in Stamullin, Co Meath, and can confirm that the sporting legend enjoys nothing more than a tasty bowl of hot Flahavans each morning! - Yours, etc., John Noonan, Marketing Director, E. Flahavan & Sons Ltd,
