Madam, - As usual, there is no need for those of us who proudly consider ourselves to be right-wingers to combat the nonsense written by the other side. They routinely upend their own arguments without our help.

Seamus Ratigan (March 15th) pompously refers to pro-Syrian demonstrations by hundreds of thousands on the streets of Lebanon as evidence that Mark Steyn's support of President Bush's Middle East policy may be a little premature.

On the very same day you carry a report on anti-Syrian demonstrations in which over a million Lebanese people participate, protesting that they did not agree with the previous week's march.

If Mr Ratigan wishes to side with the Hizbullah, those noted paragons of liberty who organised that march, he will, of course, be carrying on a long tradition of those on the left, who have in their time supported Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Che Guevara and Saddam Hussein, to name but a few shining examples of humanity's finest. - Yours, etc.,
