Sir, - Aidan O'Hanlon (January 9th) insists that the correct pronunciation of Portlaoise sounds the final "e". Technically, this is correct. However, ask anyone who actually comes from the area and its surroundings and not one will say this last syllable. I am Portlaoise-born and grew up in the area and the only time I have heard the final "e" said is on radio or television. As far as we of Laois are concerned, it is Portlaois. - Yours, etc.,
