A chara, – Fee-charging schools are worried that State funding for the sector may be withdrawn (News, February 19th).
Those schools are concerned that they will either have to raise their fees and cover the full cost of a model that excludes those who cannot afford fees, or enter the free school system.
Frankly, either choice would be fairer and more equitable than the situation that now prevails. – Is mise,

Sir, – We have a generally sound and well-regarded publicly provided secondary education system which is free at the point of use. It has the merit of more or less treating children equally, and giving them the same life chances. Where felt necessary, it caters for minority concerns – Kilkenny College and Ashton in Cork are examples.
If parents want to opt out of that system through a “private” education for their children, we can’t stop them.
But they should pay for it, in full, and not soak the taxpayer. – Yours, etc,
