Portraits of Achill

A chara, – We welcome Michael Parsons’s timely article on the American painter, Robert Henri (Fine Arts, April 6th).

On the weekend of May 3rd to 6th we will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of Henri’s arrival in Achill (heinrichboellcottage.com).

During his six years here, Robert Henri left a unique record of the children of Dooagh, which is now held in collections throughout the US.

In May 2011 the Mint Museum of Charlotte, NE, organised an exhibition of Henri’s Achill portraits, which subsequently was shown at Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe and the Everson Museum, Syracuse, New York, and attracted considerable publicity in US art circles. One of the curators of this exhibition, Valarie Ann Leeds, will be among the speakers at the Henri weekend.
