Sir, - Farmers are threatening to pull out of Partnership 2000 unless their latest demands are met. A terrifying prospect no doubt, but one which must raise a question about their status as social partners in the first place.

The exchange of wage increases for industrial peace by employers and workers under P2000 is clear and easy to understand. Likewise one can refer to the social and economic commitments entered into by the State as part of the deal. What is rather less obvious is the actual contribution of the farming community to P2000 and, conversely, the implications should this sector decide to withdraw.
