Sir, - Full responsibility for the success of the NO campaign must rest squarely with the Government, which chose to rush into this referendum giving voters insufficient time to familiarise themselves with the detail of the treaty. People will always tend to vote against something they do not understand, as remaining the same is preferable to progressing into the unknown.
This referendum has been a shot in the foot for the Government rather than a shot in the arm for the EU. - Yours, etc.,
