Metro plans for Dublin
Sir, – If nothing else, the Metro plans have generated a welcome reappraisal of Dublin transport, where new thinking is urgently needed.
The suggestion by Eamon Ryan to realign the Metro route from Charlemont through Rathmines, Terenure and on to Rathfarnham deserves further analysis.
The population density of the Rathmines-Rathfarnham quadrant (as shown in a density map in the National Transport Authority report Bus Networks Redesign Choices 2017) is significantly higher than on the Ranelagh-Sandyford corridor. As the caption on the National Transport Authority map says, “Residential density is a primary indicator of transport demand”.
Running the Metro from Charlemont to Rathfarnham (a route currently not served by any form of mass transit) would perfectly meet this transport demand. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL B BARRY,
