Sir, - I am surprised that Frank McDonald (August 16th) completely ignores the main point of recent debate about a major flaw in the proposed LUAS Development - its apparent inability to move all its expected customers from A to B.
Part of the Dart success story is that from day one, it had the capacity to perform its basic task of providing safe, reliable transport in reasonable comfort. It has now developed the problem of occasional overcrowding through its own popularity, but additional rolling stock will shortly arrive to remedy this difficulty.
However, according to capacity figures available it seems that LUAS will start off by leaving behind more people than it can carry. This can hardly be considered a serious proposal to persuade the car traveller to change to public transport. For LUAS or a similar system to succeed, everybody must have the opportunity to be on board right from the start. - Yours, etc.
