Sir, - One of the most distasteful traits of us Irish is the relish with which we kick someone when they are down. Not content with seeing Liam Lawlor sentenced to a term of imprisonment and the imposition of a substantial fine, we begrudge him a little time to get his affairs in order.
It should be borne in mind that Mr Lawlor does not pose a threat to society. Perhaps those who object to his deferred sentence might reflect on sentences handed down by our courts earlier this year to two South African nationals who were convicted of importing massive quantities of illegal drugs.
Both received suspended sentences and were deported, even though the Criminal Justice Act 1999 prescribes a minimum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment for persons convicted of the possession of drugs with a value of £10,000 or more for the purpose of sale or supply.
Instead of bellyaching over the Liam Lawlor affair, people would be better employed urging the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr John O Donoghue, to ensure that drug suppliers are not allowed to walk free.
Enjoy your holiday, Liam. - Yours, etc.,
Tom Cooper, Delaford Lawn, Knocklyon, Dublin 16.
