‘Ireland’s Call’: a warning note

Sir, – Did the ladies make a better fist of singing Ireland´s Call in unison in Milan? Their singing could hardly have been worse than the shambles in Rome. I have argued for Danny Boy or There is an Isle and even Boulavogue in many unprinted letters over the years. But surely there is a special privilege in representing the 32 counties as a whole after all our troubles (which I hardly need to begin to enumerate for your readers). Even the singing of Ireland's Call is a precious opportunity for us to assert the love of Ireland and our fervent desire for peace and unity. But then, I am only an Englishman who has taught medieval English Literature in Trinity College Dublin (founded 1592, when Ireland was still a single nation) for 44 years. – Yours, etc,
