Sir, - It becomes increasingly challenging to claim Catholicism as one's religion. I have no theological background and therefore, perhaps, I am missing some of the finer nuances in the bishops' document. However, at a time of such acute striving for reconciliation on this island, it is simply unworthy to continue to highlight differences, not to mention the elitist language in which these differences are couched.
The lack of sensitivity with respect to the timing and content is quite alarming and is more evident (should more evidence be required) that this august body of bishops is totally out of touch with the current feelings of many Catholics.
One wonders, at this stage, would some "balance of gender" finally bring some sensitivity and realism to this group of men - who continue to astonish me (for one) with their total absorption with their "truths". - Yours, etc., Mary Donohoe,
