Sir, – While Patsy McGarry (Opinion, November 22nd), called for an independent inquiry into why the programme Mission to Preywas broadcast, is he missing the point that it may have been the media in general's lack of balance in its reporting of clerical sexual abuse and the failures of the hierarchy in dealing with past cases that has given the public a false impression as to the prevalence of child sexual abuse by clerics; and that any denial by an accused cleric would not be taken seriously and not be supported by the very hierarchy that had failed to deal with child victims in the past?
Perhaps what is required in addition to good investigative journalism is a balance in reporting that ensures that all members of a profession are not condemned by the sins of a few. – Yours, etc,
