Sir, – As of January 31st, the Garda website reveals that there are 2,394 Garda offices of the rank of sergeant or above, and 185 of these are at superintendent level or above. Recent promotions to these ranks probably bring this number up to over 200. Incredibly, the Garda organisation structure allows for 15 officers with the title of commissioner, including two deputy commissioners and no less than 12 assistant commissioners. In a country of about four million people, this level of policing rank inflation defies logic. – Yours, etc,
EDWARD HORGAN,
Castletroy,
Limerick.
