Fighting in the first World War

Sir, – In response to Paddy Mc Evoy’s letter (August 11th), I find it very sad that so many Irish people died fighting in an imperialist war, being told they were fighting for the rights of small nations.

I don’t know about “official Ireland’s hopes in 1918”, however I would have been in agreement with the sentiments of the Irish Citizens’ Army banner, displayed outside Liberty Hall “We serve neither King nor Kaiser but Ireland”. – Yours, etc,

EAMONN O’NEILL,

Lurgan,

Co Armagh.
