A chara, - For Kevin Myers to suggest a fear of immigration as an implicit, or explicit, message from the recent Irish Ferries protest is mischievous (An Irishman's Diary, December 16th).

I am an immigrant and I attended the rally in Dublin with members of my immigrant family. My motives, as with others there, was to seek to ensure wages and conditions that prevent a "race to the bottom" during this time of prosperity.

The whole community, old and new, must be vigilant to ensure that exploitation and divisiveness in employment do not become the norm. This would damage social cohesion much more than race and ethnicity. - Is mise,
