Sir, - Now that the country is awash in surplus revenues, would it be at all possible for the Government to spend some of the tax-payers' money on cleaning up our streets? The recent "War on Litter" was truly pathetic. A fortnight's television ad campaign is not going to solve Dublin's litter problem.

We need an army of street-cleaners, armed with old-fashioned brushes and shovels and power-hoses, to pick up and wash down the daily filth. Common sense and manpower is what is needed. Severe fines for shopkeepers and businesses who foul the pavements with their spillage and refuse would more than for the additional labour. If our Ministers were compelled to walk through the mess the rest of us have to endure every day, maybe we would get some real action. - Yours, etc.,
