Madam, - It is noteworthy that your Editorial "Life Cheapened" (October 18th) referred to the alarming decline of moral standards in Irish society. You suggested that the explanation for this "deterioration in standards" was attributable to more than "the collapse of religious observance."

I agree; but I could not help recalling words that worshippers heard proclaimed at Mass last Sunday week: "Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honour and everything worthy of praise." (St Paul to the Philippians.)

If such teaching were taken to heart by larger numbers of our citizenry it might help to redress the creeping barbarity in our midst. I would suggest that, apart altogether from credal considerations, God's word might have something to contribute to our civic wellbeing. - Yours, etc.,
