Madam, - It seems Ivor Callely, Kilian Doyle (Motors November 23rd) and many others don't like darkened car windows and want to have them banned. I am neither a boy racer nor a car modifier but I have tinted the rear windows on my Toyota Avensis Estate. The motivation was safety.

Like many thousands of drivers, I carry precious cargo, Namely, my two-year-old daughter. Like most children of her age she gets into quite a state of discomfort and distress when the sun shines in on her in the car and can pose a significant distraction to the driver. The most effective and safe solution was to tint the windows, resulting in one contented two-year-old passenger and one less distracted and hence safer driver.

Car manufacturers have long recognised this benefit and that is the primary reason for tinting the rear windows in family vehicles.

Banning tinted front windows is a worthwhile road safety measure that I fully endorse but let's have some common sense, please, and leave my rear window alone. - Yours, etc,
