LEO CULLEN,
Sir, - I must congratulate Galway City Council for the clamping of Anne Naughton's car after she parked on the footpath (The Irish Times, July 12th).
Ms Naughton's arrogance in refusing to pay her fine is beyond belief.
Many town councils in Ireland lack the moral courage to confront the large number of drivers who insist on parking their cars on footpaths. Gardaí continue to ignore motorists who think it is their right to park on footpaths.
According to the Road Traffic Act, footpaths are for pedestrians, perambulators, wheelchairs, people with walking aids, and people with impaired vision as well as other disabilities.
The authorities who continually turn a blind eye are in my opinion discriminating against the disabled. Perhaps one of the many disability organisations will take a case pleading discrimination against their members.
LEO CULLEN,
Yours, etc.,
St Patrick's Avenue,
Wicklow.
