A Chara, - I was delighted finally to read that the Government had condemned the illegal detention facility at Guantanamo and call for its closure (Dáil Report, February 23rd).

Influential as this diplomatic pressure may be, surely the next pragmatic step would be to inform the US that military or CIA flights to or from Guantanamo would no longer be allowed to pass through Irish air space or to use either Shannon or Baldonnel airports for refuelling?

If there is even the slightest possibility that detainees are being tortured at Guantanamo, we clearly cannot be seen to facilitate the process.

I await this show of steel, but I'm not sure how long I'll hold my breath. - Yours, etc,
