Sir, - In a well known field game, a winger receives a golden ball once in a match. He sometimes kicks to touch and, once in a while, he scores a try. Ruairi Quinn was that elusive winger, but he kicked to touch.
He spread the bounty far and wide. He lost a golden opportunity to narrow the gap between the haves and the have nots. Indeed he widened the gap; the more you earned, the more you benefitted. Rural and urban poverty remains.
It is not a vote getter. Education is the key out of the poverty cycle; resources and personnel should be there for this. Take a walk on the wild side, Ruairi. Be brave, and remember that caring for a just society may in the long run turn out to be for everybody's good. - Yours, etc.,
