Sir, – I notice the increasing use of the portmanteau “Brexit” amongst commentators, which presumably refers to a possible British exit from the EU after the imminent referendum. The idea of this contraction is, I imagine, to save wind and two syllables.
Now, however, I observe with great amusement that commentators and reporters are talking about a “British Brexit” or the “Brexit in Britain”, bringing us nicely back to where we started regarding syllable count, and joining the tautological ranks of PIN numbers and AIB bank.
I am also attempting to envisage what form of Brexit there could possibly be other than a British one.
