Betting memories

Sir, – Irene Allen’s concern about communion and confirmation meals at Shelbourne Park greyhound stadium (Letters, March 13th) reminded me of Saturday mornings when I was a toddler.

My father, being a Guinness employee, would take me to the Iveagh Sports ground in Crumlin each Saturday, travelling by bus from Cork Street. Right beside the bus stop was a green-fronted shop marked “Turf Accountants”. So, while waiting for the bus, my father would leave me outside the shop while he disappeared inside. Thus, for many years I earnestly believed he was going in each week to pay for the turf we were burning on the fire at home. – Yours, etc,

TONY CORCORAN,

Rathfarnham,

Dublin 14.
