Waiting lists and brain injuries

Sir, –This week is International Brain Awareness Week worldwide, and it is worth reflecting on some numbers from an Irish perspective.

We are ranked sixth in the world for research into neuroscience, leading the way in pioneering new understanding and treatments for brain conditions.

On the other hand, only one in six of us can hope to access specialist rehabilitation if we suffer an acquired brain injury, stroke or other serious neurological condition. Over 20,000 people are now on waiting lists to see a neurologist, with 7,000 waiting for more than 12 months.

These sobering thoughts should exercise all our brains this week. – Yours, etc,
