Baffled by the Brexit border backstop

Sir, – I am totally confused as to the meaning of backstop, the present buzz word used by commentators and politicians to give comfort to those of us who are worried about a return of a closed border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Surely doorstop would be a more comforting word for us sceptics, as that would imply that the door, or in other words the Border would be kept open in the event that Brexit actually occurs. – Yours, etc,

CHARLES SMYTH,

Kells,

Co Meath.
