Madam, - The report that Mr Bertie Ahern used a hidden side entrance to the tribunal hearing on Wednesday evokes memories of Mr Charles Haughey entering the District Court in North Brunswick Street in the early hours of the morning some years ago, long before the case was to be heard later that day.

The efforts (both successful) of each Taoiseach, in seeking to avoid the photographers and the adulation of the public, display a deep humility which is to be commended. It was in marked contrast to the condescending attitude shown by the Oscar celebrities to their assembled and enthusiastic fans as they "worked the crowd" while strolling up the red carpet to the ceremony entrance, to the accompaniment of innumerable flash bulbs.

Or am I just an old cynic? - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - I see that the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, used the back door to Dublin Castle when he arrived to give evidence to the Mahon Tribunal on Wednesday.

I wonder whether during the canvas for the upcoming June elections, will Mr Ahern and his cohorts go knocking on people's back doors? To paraphrase that other illustrious tribunal witness, James Gogarty, "will they f***k". - Yours, etc.,

Cllr FINTAN CASSIDY (Independent), Annadale Crescent, Marino, Dublin 9.
