ATMs and banknotes

Madam, - In Munich recently I withdrew €200 from an ATM machine. To my surprise I received notes to the following value: one €100, one €50, one €20, two €10 and two €5. In Ireland one would receive four €50 notes. This is not much use when all you want is money to buy a newspaper and a packet of peanuts.

I understand some shopkeepers now refuse to change high-value notes for small purchases. And who can blame them? It seems the banks rely on shopkeepers to have large amounts of small notes on hand to replace their own responsibility for providing them at their ATM machines. - Yours, etc,
