Madam, – Two recent events at Dublin’s iconic Guinness Brewery, the outbreak of a major fire there and the celebrations to commemorate 250 years brewing the famous black stuff, prompted me to ponder why, almost 90 years after independence, the Liffey quay which fronts the famous Guinness brewery retains the name Victoria?
The Guinness brewery, in addition to being the largest exporter of stout in the world, is also Ireland’s largest tourist attraction.
Surely the city fathers at Dublin City Hall should consider renaming this section of the quays to reflect the input the Guinness family made to the commercial, political and social fabric of Dublin life for more than two centuries?
I believe such an act would be welcomed by most Dubliners and would be seen as far more appropriate than a continuation of the current name of Victoria Quay. – Yours, etc,
