Sir, – The UN Charter records that the organisation was founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and serve as a centre for harmonising actions.
While no one could reasonably argue that this frequently flawed and often toothless organisation has accomplished all of these goals, its lofty aims remain as relevant today as when they were first drafted in the aftermath of the second World War.
That US president Donald Trump should choose this very forum to casually consider the annihilation of a country and the consignment of its citizens to hell, is not just a breach of international norms of diplomacy but an affront to basic human decency. – Yours, etc,
