As it turned out, our friendly driver was a literary giant

We just presumed he was an enthusiastic reader

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - In the early 1970s, my husband and I hitched around Kerry on holiday. A kind gentleman stopped and gave us a lift to our next destination. During the journey, he asked if we were interested in Irish literature and if so, which writers we were familiar with.

I mentioned some Irish writers whose work I enjoyed. He then asked if I was familiar with the writer Bryan MacMahon. I replied that I wasn’t but would certainty look out for his work.

It was only some time later that I discovered, much to my embarrassment, that our delightful driver was the author himself. - Yours, etc,

Remembering the kindness I was shown when hitchhiking

Sir, - In my youth, I hitched in a single day from Geneva to Frankfurt (10-plus lifts and 600km) and eventually got left on the side of a very dark autobahn with instructions to walk towards the city’s bright lights. After some hours walking alongside major roads and forests, I got picked up after midnight by some students. They snuck me into their hostel on the understanding that I’d leave before the caretaker came on duty at 6am. - Yours, etc,
