Sir, – Last Saturday, on a bit of a whim, I asked this girl I’ve known for 45 years out to lunch. She is the mother of my two daughters and the grandmother of my two joys.
We wandered up to the local eatery where we had a delightful lunch, a long chat and a nice walk back home again. In the 2½ hours we were out, a mobile phone was neither watched or needed. This is very normal for us.
Regrettably, for the families and couples who shared the eating space with us, a plethora of mobile phones were on show. They appeared to be an essential accompaniment to their lunch.
