Sir, -Your letters on hitching from Newlands Cross remind me of events of many years ago.
My friend always had a car and very often of the non -stylish type. He would drive me to Newlands and park adjacent to the hitching area. He would raise the bonnet and pretend he had car trouble, whereupon he would raise his right arm and invariably a car would stop and he’d explain help was coming. He would point out I was the victim and a lift was assured and he’d close the bonnet and return home. – Yours, etc,
