Stamp of approval for our Irish-American fallen

Sir, – While not appearing on any commemorative stamps of Irish-American Sullivans, either in Ireland or the US (Letters, July 25th), the Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa, would surely be fitting candidates for such an honour.

All five were killed in action during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, while serving on the USS Juneau.

A convention centre and a museum wing in Waterloo, Iowa, an elementary school in Yosuka, Japan, two US navy ships and the Adrigole Loop Walk/O’Sullivan Mile, a coastal trail which passes through the townland of Trafrask in Adrigole parish on the Beara peninsula – from where their grandparents Mary Bridget and Tom O’Sullivan emigrated to the United States in 1849 – already commemorate George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert O’Sullivan.

Commemorative stamps would be a welcome addition to this list. – Yours, etc,
