Sir, – It’s really sad reading how rundown the Pearse Street flats complex has become (Mixed welcome for plan to renew flats complex, April 2nd).
My grandparents lived in a one-bedroom flat on Block H initially and, subsequently, moved to a two-bedroom flat next door, as their family grew. They had six children.
Obviously, there weren’t the mod cons that we consider necessary in today’s world. The photograph of the kitchen brought a smile to my face.
Believe it or not, in times past, the kitchen doubled up as a bathroom. If you wanted to take a bath, you took it in the kitchen because directly under the kitchen counter, on the right, next to the stove, was the enamel bath. – Yours, etc,
