Minister’s shunning of taxis proposal hard to fathom

Transport needs of towns such as Mallow not being served

Letter of the Day

Sir, - Two years ago, after a day at Cork Racecourse, our group went to Mallow for food and drinks. Later on, we asked the proprietor if it was possible to call a taxi. His reply was “not likely”; there wasn’t a single taxi working in the Mallow area that Saturday night.

I’m dumbfounded that the Dublin-based Minister for Transport, Darragh O’ Brien, chooses to ignore the recommendations of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to open up the taxi market.

Only in Ireland would a minister for transport refuse to improve public transport.

Simply unbelievable. - Yours, etc,

KENNETH B ROBINSON,

Grenagh,

Co Cork.
