Gardaí and using Tasers

The riots escalated to the point that O’Connell Street became a dangerous no-go area

Sir, – Could I suggest that members of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties would review the extensive video coverage of the 2024 riots in Dublin city centre in the context of their objections to the issuing of tasers to members of An Garda Síochána.

The equipment available to gardaí has basically not changed in decades while the environment in which they operate has – beyond all recognition.

The riots on that particular night escalated to the point that O’Connell Street became a dangerous no-go area without the presence of tasers. Perhaps if members of the council spent a few nights on foot patrol in Dublin city centre accompanied by a garda they might gain a different perspective on the situations which confront gardaí on a nightly basis. – Yours, etc,

GARY DOYLE,

Co Kildare.
